It takes collaboration to protect and improve the public health of millions of people. FPHNYC’s new impact report explores how partnerships are helping NYC make progress on public health challenges such as chronic disease and mental health.

FPHNYC is the dedicated nonprofit partner of the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. We mobilize resources, manage programs, and engage community-based organizations as partners. Our collaborative model advances important population health initiatives such as HealthyNYC—New York’s bold plan to increase life expectancy to 83 years by 2030.

As New York City and local nonprofits grapple with significant cuts in federal funding, the agility and efficiency of our public-private model—which often makes it possible for public dollars to go further—have become indispensable. By connecting public resources with private funding and community expertise, FPHNYC is able to enhance and scale the health department’s programs to reach more people and have a greater impact.

To anyone who cares about the health and well-being of New York: now is the time to support FPHNYC as we partner with the Health Department and hundreds of community-based organizations in NYC to develop programs that provide millions of New Yorkers with essential public health services. We are committed to making it possible for every New Yorker to live their healthiest life.

Over the past year, we have celebrated the 20th anniversary of FPHNYC’s founding following the September 11 attacks with a mission to help protect and improve the health of all New Yorkers. First, on May 18, 2022, Mayor Adams issued a proclamation of “Fund for Public Health Day,” then in November,  a team of runners represented FPHNYC in the 2022 TCS NYC Marathon, and in late March we celebrated our partnership with the NYC Health Department at a reception where we honored one of our founding board members, Pamela Brier.

We have a gallery of photos online from the March celebration, including the presentation of a citation from Mayor Adams recognizing founding board member Pamela Brier’s 40+ years of public health service to NYC, including more than two decades as a member of the City’s Board of Health. It was wonderful to have the citation presented by First Deputy Mayor Sheena Wright, Chief Advisor to the Mayor Ingrid Lewis-Martin, and City Health Commissioner and FPHNYC Board Chair Dr. Ashwin Vasan.

The importance of FPHNYC to New York City is best told by the New York City Health Commissioners who worked with and, as our board chairs, helped lead FPHNYC over the past two decades. Watch this 5-minute video featuring Drs. Thomas Frieden, Thomas Farley, Mary Bassett, Oxiris Barbot, and Dave Chokshi.

The history and accomplishments of FPHNYC are nicely summarized in the 5-minute slideshow you can watch as a video.

We are so appreciative of everyone who has helped us plan and celebrate FPHNYC’s 20th anniversary year. A special thank you to Bloomberg Philanthropies for going above and beyond in hosting last week’s event.

Our celebration of FPHNYC’s 20th anniversary was not an endpoint but the beginning of a new phase of our partnership with the Health Department, the philanthropic community, and all the visionary individuals who have contributed to our success these past 20 years. We are grateful for your support and partnership and look forward to the next 20 years as we continue our work in service to all New Yorkers!
